About Us

The Ave Maria Gift Shop in Portland, Maine has provided a source for people to continue their religious beliefs.  Ave Maria has touched the lives of many Catholics and non-Catholics and is a place where people can seek comfort through spiritual books, prayer cards, candles and other religious items.

James and Connie Somma took over the gift shop in 1995.  Previously the gift shop was located on Congress Street; however under the guidance of the previous owner, Robert Pevarada, the gift shop was relocated to the corner of Arbor Street and Stevens Avenue in Portland.  This area now provides more parking for its customers without a time constraint.

Since the move, James and Connie have seen an increase in customers to the point where they had to expand the building in the summer of 2001. With the expansion James and Connie have increased their assortment of merchandise, which includes heirloom-christening apparel, First Communion dresses and many other items.

James and Connie have received many positive notes and letters on their new appearance. Letters and notes that they have received, gives them, at the Ave Maria, great pleasure that the tradition is still being carried on and wish to thank all who made this possible. Please feel free to explore this new site. Thank you and God Bless you all.
